Book Review: The Wives by Tarryn Fisher
Blurb:
New York Times bestselling author Tarryn Fisher delivers a pulse-pounding, fast-paced suspense novel that will leave you breathless. A thriller you won’t be able to put down!
Thursday’s husband, Seth, has two other wives. She’s never met them, and she doesn’t know anything about them. She agreed to this unusual arrangement because she’s so crazy about him.
But one day, she finds something. Something that tells a very different—and horrifying—story about the man she married.
What follows is one of the most twisted, shocking thrillers you’ll ever read.
My thoughts
Rating: 3 Stars ⭐
Wow!!!
I think I need a few days to let this story sink in.
Was Thursday telling the truth? Was Seth lying? Did he have three wives? Did Regina and Hannah set Thursday up? That ending? So many questions....
I must say this story kept my interest there were many surprises and I definitely did not see that ending coming. This review will be a short one because anything I say will spoil the book for others who may want to read it. But what I can say is that this story really spoke to the fact that sometimes love can lead to obsession and all women were obsessed with Seth.
The characters in this story are all broken mentally in some way made this somewhat a heavy read in my opinion. At several points in the story I had a really hard time trying to figure out who to believe, so at points it became a bit confusing.
Seth was a master manipulator. Wow!!! And Regina definitely was a woman scorned, my goodness and that ending.
Omg. I really hope I am making sense in this review today! This is just one of those books that has me on pause.

Blog Tour: A Chance Encounter by Rae Shaw @rararesources # Excerpt
It is my pleasure to present on my blog today an excerpt of "A Chance Encounter by Rae Shaw".
A Chance
Encounter
Julianna Baptiste, a feisty bodyguard, finds her new job tedious,
that is until her boss, the evasive Jackson Haynes, spikes her curiosity. Who
is behind the vicious threats to his beautiful wife and why is he interested in
two estranged siblings?
Mark works for Haynes’s vast company. He’s hiding from ruthless
money launderers.
His teenage sister Ellen has an online friend whom she has never
met. Ellen guards a terrible secret.
For eight years their duplicitous father has languished in prison,
claiming he is innocent of murder. The evidence against him is overwhelming, so
why does Mark persist with an appeal?
Keen to prove her potential as an investigator, Julianna forces
Mark to confront his mistakes. The consequences will put all their lives in
danger.
Here is a sneak peek!!!
She shouldn’t say
anything, but Julianna can’t resist opening up to Hettie. Instead of acting
like a bodyguard, she’s starting to behave like a friend – is this a good move
for the both of them?
‘Mrs Haynes, I thought
you should know, well...’ Julianna lost momentum before she had uttered a
complete sentence.
‘Go on, Julianna. The
road is long, as they say,’ Hettie said, encouragingly.
‘Mark Clewer and I are
in a relationship.’ Julianna exhaled and waited for a reply.
‘Okay. He once was my
accountant. It’s not something that bothers me. I get the feeling that my
previous dealings with Mark are bothering you though.’ Hettie leaned towards
the centre of the car and came into view of the mirror.
‘We’re not in love or
anything.’ There was nothing romantic about what she did with Mark in her
bedroom, only that it served a mutual purpose. ‘But I do care about him. Can we
just be honest with each other, Mrs Haynes?’
‘Sure, fire away.’
‘I’ve being seeing
Mark since the gala ball. But my question goes back to before them. To be
blunt, I drove you and your husband to the clinic, remember?’
‘Ah. We spoke about
Mark in the car on the way, didn’t we? Whoops.’
‘Yes. You implied
Jackson was being less than kind about how he was treating Mark.’
‘I did?’ Hettie
feigned surprise. She had shifted back in her seat again, hiding whatever
expression was painting her face. ‘I probably over-egged it, that's all.’
‘I know about his
father being in prison for murder. I assume that was what you were referring
to.’
‘Yes, naturally,’
Hettie said slowly. ‘That's quite a lot to get to grips with, isn't it, on top
of everything else. Poor Mark.’
On top of everything
else? Hettie hadn't known about Mark's father. Julianna now knew she and
Jackson had been discussing something else. Julianna had unwittingly told
Hettie about Mark's father. Jackson would not be pleased. There again, Jackson
had not laid down his own agenda and what was she expected to do with the
sporadic amounts of information flying in her direction? Duck or charge at
them?

Johanna Palmer is very much over relationships.

EXCERPT:
“They’re seniors at Portland State,” Kayleigh hissed under her breath as the bouncer glanced at their IDs and ushered them inside. Miller wiggled his eyebrows as the three of them hurried through the doors. The bar was lively, but not as crowded as Jo had expected. The stage was just a small platform in the back corner with a few lights pointed in its direction. Wires and musical instruments were strewn about, but none of the band members had surfaced yet.
“I’ve never heard of them,” Jo admitted.
“They’re about to make it big,” Kayleigh insisted, raising onto her tiptoes to get a look at the line out the windows. “I can’t see Addie or Liv anymore.” She turned to Miller. “What are your roommates’ names again?”
Miller frowned and shrugged.
Jo stifled a snort. At least it wasn’t just her.
“You don’t know any of their names?” Kayleigh demanded.
Miller narrowed his eyes, considering this. “Pretty sure one of them is Alan—big guy with the goofy hair? And one of them might be Gatsby. Or maybe he just likes The Great Gatsby…” He shook his head. “Nah, he doesn’t seem like the kind to read. I think it’s his name.”
Kayleigh threw her hands up, her gaze now moving on to survey the rest of the crowd—a few people were wearing T-shirts with the name UNITED FATES scrawled across the front, but not many. She jutted her chin toward the bar and elbowed Jo in the ribs. “You should get the drinks. You look the most twenty-one of the three of us.”
Jo shot an uneasy glance toward the bar and adjusted the straps of her tank top. She already had the wristband from the front door. The hard part was over. She forced a smile and flipped her hair over her shoulders. She’d curled it tonight, and the tinted lights overhead were making it look more wine-colored than its usual copper shade. “I’ll be right back.”
The bartender did a quick once-over as she approached. “What can I get you?” His hair was nearly as red as Johanna’s was, complete with a matching mustache. He also looked to be barely twenty-one himself.
“Three beers.” Her gaze swept the bar, and she pointed to a fish-shaped tap handle. “That one.” She had no idea if that one was any good, but the bartender turned away wordlessly and grabbed three glasses.
“Those all for you?”
A man slid into the chair on Johanna’s left. The first thing she noticed was the tattoos. He braced an arm on the bar, revealing a sleeve all the way from his wrist to his shoulder beneath his white T-shirt. All of the images and words blurred seamlessly together, the black ink stark against his pale skin. A silver coin on a long chain dangled from his neck as he leaned forward.
The second thing she noticed was how inky and gelled his hair was, styled to stand up just-so in the front. He must have spent at least half as long as she had in front of the mirror tonight.
The final thing she noticed was the way his eyes lingered on her body. He found her face eventually, but it was a steep climb to get there. He started at her legs, then gradually made it to her hips, her waist, her chest, and then, finally, her eyes. He wasn’t even being subtle about it. He wanted her to see him looking at her.
From what she could tell, he had a nice body, too. But she definitely wasn’t about to give him the satisfaction of watching her check him out.
“I don’t have NPS tattooed on my lip for nothing,” she said as the bartender returned and slid the beers across the counter to her.
“NPS?” asked the mystery guy.
She quirked an eyebrow at him over her shoulder. “No pussy shit.”

What an adventure!!!
In this fifth installment of the DI Stella Cole Thrillers, author Andy Maslen did not disappoint. This exciting story begins with a crime so gruesome that it had me at the edge of my seat from page one. Former Swedish ambassador Tomas Bromly is found dead in his flat with a severed tongue. DCI Stella Cole is on the case and in her quest for the killer, she is led to Sweden where every revelation becomes more shocking than the next. As the case progresses Stella is also confronted with demons form her past, which continue to haunt her and even her relationships. Can she move on??
I read this book in one sitting (yes it was that good). Although my reading tastes are of a wide variety, one of my favourite genres are crime thriller novels like this one. What stood out for me most in the book (and you will realize this as you read) is that most if not all leading roles were held by women. As detective work goes, males are usually the heroes so having female heroines in my opinion gave the story a nice twist.
Another great aspect of the story was that it read like a standalone rather than a part of a series. I was especially appreciative of this because I haven't read the previous books (although I am going to source the complete series now). It was not difficult to grasp the story. The characters were all relatable, the best job was done with Roisin's character because as I read I could actually picture her personality. Her role made the story rich.
The murders and the events in the novel were very well sequenced and this made for easy reading. Trust me, you would not want to put this book down. In all, this was a well written novel for fans of Crime Fiction.
Thank you for a wonderful story Mr. Maslen!!

Blog Tour #Book Review: Memoirs of a Karate Fighter by Ralph Robb @rararesources; @RalphSRobb
Memoirs of a Karate Fighter
Novelist and
former karate champion Ralph Robb recounts his experiences at one of Europe’s
toughest dojos and provides an insight into the philosophy and training methods
of a club which produced national, European and world titleholders. In a
hard-hitting story, Ralph tells of the fights on and off the mat; his
experiences as one of a very few black residents in an area in which racist
members of the National Front were very active; and the tragic descent into
mental illness and premature death of the training partner who was also his
best friend.

"The spirit of the warrior becomes like water. Water adopts the same shape as its container; Sometimes it is a trickle, sometimes it is a raging sea." Miyamoto Musashi - The Water Book.
After reading this memoir I now have a further appreciation for not only karate but for sport in general in terms of the impact it has on lives.
Mr. Robb, in this memoir, wrote about his experiences so skillfully that at some points in the story I felt like I was there witnessing the fights, experiencing the high points that come with winning and the low points as well.
I highly recommend this book to individuals who may want to understand karate as a sport because it was an educational read since it gave an in-depth explanation of techniques and through the writer's experience someone who is interested in karate can get some rich information.
I loved learning about the Wolverhampton YMCA Karate Club and the prominence it held during the 1970s and the 1980s. Apart from karate, this book spoke to issues such as race, discrimination, mental and physical health. The most impacting for me in this story was the sheer joy and love the writer felt about this sport. I enjoyed this very much. In all this was a wonderful story and I highly recommend this book.

“And may I ask another question?” Red asked, making her voice soft and
sweet. “If it’s not too much trouble.”
“Of course, my dearie.”
The old driver laughed. “Always happy to assist a young beauty like yourself.”
“Back at the village…
um… what was it called? I missed the sign,” she asked.
“Pineborough is the
name.”
“Yes, Pineborough,” she
continued. “May I ask why everyone was so… well… mournful? Has something
happened?”
“Oh, um,” the driver
mumbled, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. “They’s just a bit nervous is
all.”
“Nervous?” Red pressed.
“Because of the wagon? Because of us?”
“Or the guards?”
Rapunzel offered from behind her.
“Oh no.” The driver
shook his head. “Nothing like that. It’s just getting close to evening is all.”
“They’re scared of the
dark?” Red laughed. “Surely not.”
“True right, they are,”
the driver replied, his voice deep and serious. “And you should be, too, if you
know what’s good for ya.”
“Why must I be scared of
the dark?” Red asked, her eyebrows furrowed.
“Because the dark is
when it comes,” he growled. “The dark brings death.”
“Death? What comes?” I
stammered, scrambling closer to the little window.
“The beast.”

Book Review: Sisters And Their Plight With Boys - Destiny Love Jones Vol. 1 by NR White ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Title: Sisters And Their Plight With Boys - Destiny Love Jones Vol. 1
Author: N.R. White
Source: Author
Format: Kindle E copy
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Synopsis:
From a unique Canadian perspective, this novel is a compelling, coming-of-age story focusing on the issues of race, class, gender, love, trauma, and romance through the lens of black sisterhood. I wrote this book to entertain but to also shine some light on the intersectionality and unexplored lives of black women and girls, with hopes that every reader, from all walks of life, can understand, appreciate, empathize, and more so relate to the universal element that connects us all – being human.
The story begins in the 1940s and '50s in the rural, coastal town of Cliff Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada. Pearl, Augustine, and Holly are black teens forced to live in the reality of war, segregation, classism, and patriarchy; however, their faith in sisterhood and bond of friendship strengthens and unites them. Subsequently, their friendship is tested to the cusp of utter devastation. With an impish twist of irony, forward forty years later in the late ’90s, and as fate had once aligned Pearl, Augustine, and Holly’s sisterly bond, so it does with Destiny and her friends Olivia and Tiffany. Although society has progressed since the ’50s, being a black teen girl in modern times continues to present its unique challenges. Will their sisterly bond be fortified among adversity, or will they be pulled apart like the women of two generations before them?
Review:
I loved everything about this story.
This is what I would call an tale of how a broken bond between girlfriends could take years to heal.
The author was very clever with the name of this book Sisters and the Plight With Boys. I say this because as I reflect on the friends who began this story Holly, Pearl and Augustine that theme of the impact of males on friendships among women carried throughout the book.
I always mention in my reviews that I love books that are not only entertaining but have a message. This book had several messages, it spoke to issues like parenting, friendship, mental health, sexual abuse, love, marriage and when reading it you will feel every emotion possible. What I love especially about this novel is that every single character's role was of equal importance, so while the book had many characters every person was well placed so that you understood their roles.
Olivia's character was well written I enjoyed reading of her journey the most although it pained me sometimes . Orville Jr. and Laura's relationship was so well crafted that you felt as if you were witnessing their lives unfold. Destiny is the glue that brings everything together. But what happened to Lyrix though???
The ending had me very emotional I actually cried (I will share no more on this). All in all this was a wonderful story. I look forward to more in the future.
I cannot wait for the other volumes to come out cause I am curious about what will become of Destiny, Olivia and Tiffany.
Well done!!!
Much thanks to the author for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review.
